If you'd never sent a direct message before, first expand the section with the same name on the sidebar and hit the plus button, or the "Start a conversation" button.
After that, search for the user(s) you want to send a private message to. Finally, hit the "Create DM Group" button.
To leave a direct messaging group just hit the Leave button, located in the kebab (three vertical dots) at the top right corner.
